Rose Jenkins

Rose creates ceramic pieces to be used everyday, bringing a quiet beauty to daily rituals.   She uses stoneware clay, renowned for its strength and durability and her pieces are handbuilt using age old techniques- coiling clay, pinching to create forms and rolling slabs to manipulate into vessels.  It’s intuitive, there is a sense of play and joy within the forms she creates.  Sometimes she uses moulds she has made or even old collected china to form the initial shapes.  At each stage of the process she is led by the materials, an idea of the intended piece and the textures and qualities of the clay and glaze.  The simple forms she creates are glazed in layers, exploring tonal subtlety and textures.

Details inspire her, the shape of a piece of ancient pottery or a glass vessel, the textures of vintage fabric, nature- ferns unfurling, lichen on twigs brought down by winds, the gloss and gleam of the first conkers.  Tiny details might spark an idea that then develops in her mind.

Rose studied Textiles at Winchester School of Art and worked as an embroidery designer for years in London before teaching Art and then dedicating more time to her ceramic practice.  She creates her ceramic pieces in her garden studio deep in the Dorset countryside.
