Sophie White

Sophie White is a multidisciplinary artist, after having lived nomadically around the world for the past five years, she has recently settled in Somerset.

In each space White finds herself she captures fleeting moments of light and shadow; fixated by the pervading nature of light in our lives, how it connects us to each other and to the past, an eternal element. The corners she captures via film photography and often works directly from these to inform subsequent oil paintings, she thinks of this process as bowing to the mundanity of the everyday.

White studied art in Bristol, and since then her practise has spanned painting, photography, sculpture, poetry, videography and installation. She attempts to harness the elements of light and time in each given medium.

The subject of White’s work is slippery, it is that hidden, forgotten truth that shocks you through your open window. Her work seeks to glorify everyday encounters, to kindle a reflection or meditation on these small things which are truly the big things.
