British artist, born 1963
Matthew Usmar Lauder is a British painter whose work has been exhibited in major public institutions, commercial galleries and international exhibitions in the UK and Europe. His paintings are held in public and private collections, including the UK Government Art Collection, and his work has been selected for two of Britain’s most respected painting exhibitions: the BP Portrait Award at the National Portrait Gallery, London, and the John Moores Painting Prize at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool.
His practice has centred on painting, drawing and works on paper, often using found and photographic imagery as a point of departure. His paintings combine figurative subject matter with atmosphere, ambiguity and a strong sense of memory and narrative.
