Emily Matcham is a fine artist living in Somerset. Her oil paintings are always created ‘en plein air’ in an attempt to capture the subtleties of the landscape changing day by day throughout the year.
Emily is interested in trying to record a memory of a particular place, long after it has been left. She believes that the act of placing paint to board creates a lasting ‘imprint’ of the mind. She is constantly inspired by the surrounding Somerset countryside and loves to go off in search of new painting spots locally, as well as in Herefordshire, Cornwall and along the Jurassic coast.
Recently Emily has also created a collection of ceramic lamp bases. Each lamp is carefully built by hand in the studio from terracotta earthenware clay. They are then decorated with the traditional method of ‘slipware’ (a very popular decorating method used in the South West for hundreds of years but dating back as far as Ancient Greece). The lamp bases are then decorated with different oxides, where inspiration for the colours is taken from Emily’s landscape paintings. Each piece is totally unique.
